Digital literacy practices have grown up around social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. The aim of this activity is to make learners reflect about the various ways people construct their online identities and present themselves in online social networks.

This activity is adapted by the Chapter 10 – “Social Networking”, found on the website of the book “Understanding Digital Literacies. A practical Introduction” by Rodney H. Jones and Christoph A. Hafner.

Face-to-face:

  1. Ask the learners if they have social media accounts and how often they use them.
  2. Ask from each one to check the information he/she has posted on social media in the last week including photos, links and comments.
  3. Discuss the following questions: “Which of these items has received the most attention from the other people in your network (e.g. “likes”’ or comments)? “Why do you think this is?”.
  4. Take some notes on the board.
  5. Reflect upon the results and discuss further about the creation of our “online identity”.
